Radwanska claims her first title at her first tournament of the year
January 5, 2013
Agnieszka Radwanska has lived up to her top billing at the ASB Classic with a 6-4 6-4 victory over third seed Yanina Wickmayer in today’s final.
The Polish star was simply too consistent for the error-ridden Wickmayer, giving the world no. 4 her first ever victory in the first tournament that she has played in a season.
The Belgian pushed Radwanska all the way but in the end the difference was as clear as the 19 rankings points that separates them.
Radwanska returns just about every ball and waits for her opponents to make the mistakes. Sadly Wickmayer made too many of those today in her third appearance in an ASB Classic final.
Radwanska hopes to return next year after saying that she couldn’t have a better start to the year in her preparations for the first Grand Slam.
“I played five good matches here without dropping a set so I’m ready for the Australian Open. I want to at least get to the semifinals there.”
Commenting on her unique style where she mixes it up against more powerful opponents, she said after the win: “I can’t hit the ball as hard but I’m always trying to find a way to win the point.”
