New Zealnd Davis Cup and Fed Cup Teams

NEW ZEALAND INTERNATIONAL TEAMS

New Zealand has made great strides regarding tennis competitions from playing alongside Australia to breaking away and reaching international heights. As such, there are many matches that New Zealanders take part in, both locally and internationally, key among them being the ASB Classic. This event name encompasses both the Women’s WTA Auckland Open and the Men’s ATP Auckland Open competitions. These events take place in New Zealand and are subject to tons of participation. Let’s have a look at what they have to offer.

The New Zealand Davis Cup Team

This team represents New Zealand in the Davis Cup tennis matches, and it falls under the watch of the Tennis New Zealand Association. The team currently participates in the Oceania Zone in the Group I category. Their most recent match in the group was in 1991, and they managed to get to the semi-final stage in 1982.

Team Overview

The team has been in existence for at least sixty-eight years during which they have had 134 ties and eight years in the world group. Their best finish stands at reaching the semi-finals in 1982. Alistair Hunt heads this team as captain and the team currently ranks as 33rd according to the ITF rankings. Its colors are black and white.

How did the team come to be?

During the early years of tennis in New Zealand, players partnered with Australian players and together, they played as Australasia. This gameplay began towards the start of the twentieth century and went on to 1914. During their years together, the players were able to clinch wins in the Davis Cup in 1907, 1908, 1909, 1911 and 1914. Anthony Wilding, a renowned tennis player from New Zealand, was the only New Zealander who got the opportunity to participate in the cup and he was by the winning team as they bagged the wins leading to 1914. New Zealand was able to host the Davis Cup Finals a few times. The first time was in 1912 when the finals took place in Christchurch and the second time was in 1921 when they took place in Auckland. Shortly after this, New Zealand broke away from Australasia, and they started playing in the international scene.

They were quick to nurture their abilities, so much so that they made it to the semi-final stage of the 1982 World Group Matches. They had started off by playing on grass in Christchurch where they were able to beat Spain 3-2 on their home ground. From here, they progressed to playing with Italy in Cervia on clay where they managed to defeat the host team 3-2. On getting to Aix-en-Provence in France, they lost to their hosts 2-3 and walked away, feeling proud of how much they had achieved in the game. The participants that year were Onny Parun, Bruce Derlin, Chris Lewis and Russell Simpson. 1982 was not the only time that New Zealand got to shine in the World Group matches as they were able to make it to the quarterfinals in the years 1981, 1983 and 1990.

How did it all begin?

They started off in 1965, and in their first try, the managed to get to the quarterfinals, which was a boost for the team. They later got to the quarterfinals again in 1971. The team has faced some setbacks in its operation. In 2012, they were not allowed to take part in the Fed Cup competitions, owing to a late withdrawal the previous year. Their lack of participation saw them withdraw from the games in 2015 and 2016 as they felt that they might not be competitive enough for the tasks that lay ahead. They are slowly starting up again, and will soon be back to their top shape.
